Global development has driven the need for better transportation around the world and it is projected that up to 5 million kilometres of roads will be constructed in the next 3 decades. In China alone, there is currently over 20,000 kilometres of tunnels (railway, highway and water conveyance) being constructed in the mountainous areas in the southwest of China. Several super projects in transportation area are planned to start in the next couple years, such as the Bohai Strait tunnel. Construction in such regions can be challenging due to geological faults or karst conduits. Resulting geohazrds such as water & mud inrush have been known to cause serious economic losses and adverse social impacts and even casualties.
We are pleased to announce thesecond international workshop on Discrete Methods in Geotechnical Engineering for Transportation (DMGT)which will be held at the Shandong University, December, 2020. The first workshop was successfully held at the University of Edinburgh August 2019. Experts from UK, USA, and China attended the first workshop.
The workshop will focus on the use of discrete methods for transportation geotechnical engineering and aim to gather over 100 key researchers in the field from around the world. The workshop will look at the success to date in modelling and address future challenges in the field such as verification, calibration and validation. This requires the modellers to work with experimentalists in providing physical measurements to inform the model, and to provide validation towards achieving a predictive model for simulation driven design.
l Multiscale & Coupled Models （DEM-CFD, DEM-MBD, DEM-FEM）
l Application of discrete methods in disasters such as water inrush in tunneling and underground engineering
l Application of discrete methods in the simualtion rock and earth embankment dams
l Simulation of material properties with discrete methods
l Model verification & Validation
